DISCOVERING TERRA INCOGNITA
Book Cover Design
A philosophy professor commissioned me to create an image for his book cover, as well as the overall design of the cover itself. The theme he presented was the dichotomy between the familiar and the unknown, the recognition of the familiar within the unknown, and vice versa—"home" as an unknown (incognito) place. I was given the freedom to choose the subject, and, finding myself on the island of Ithaca—the ultimate homeland—I played with its representation and mystification. Through the presentation of multiple variations on the theme, we gradually refined the project to achieve the result the client desired. For the various artwork variants, I used original photographs I had taken myself. The book was published in the United States by Lexington Books and the project was a success, with both the client and readers responding positively to the cover design.
The wind is blowing.
